Post Tribunal Verdict: Ajimobi, Akala In Secret Meeting

Published

on

Barely 24 hours into the announcement of the election tribunal upholding the victory of the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi came a clandestine meeting between the Governor and his predecessor, Otunba Bayo Alao-Akala in what many called ‘thank you dinner’ in honor of Chief Akala.

Akala was among other top five contenders who slugged it out with Ajimobi to wrestle the control baton of the State from him. He was the flagbearer of the Labour Party which he joined when he dumped the PDP after losing the party ticket to Senator Teslim Folarin.

Many political observers in Oyo State believed that Otunba Akala was instrumental to the victory of Governor Ajimobi in the polls. The former Governor was alleged to have silently canvassed for votes for Ajimobi in his stronghold of Ogbomoso and other areas of the State where he was popular during the election.

Another strong indication of his alliance with Governor Ajimobi was the expectation of the people that Akala would also bring out evidence like Senator Rasheed Ladoja to challenge Ajimobi’s victory at the tribunal which he failed to do.

Akala and Ajimobi were said to have both had an agreement with promises of delivery after the tribunal pronouncement and the dinner they had together at the Government House, Agodi Ibadan led credence to the story already making the rounds.

The dinner which held with strictly close aides of both the Governor and Akala in attendance was where they both discussed the agreement they already had.

A source privy to what transpired at the meeting told papermache that part of the request of Akala was for his daughter and two of his aides to be appointed as Commissioners, while his young son would also be allowed to contest for chairmanship in his Local Government.

Governor Ajimobi’s request was solely for a support for whoever he chooses to present as his successor in 2019.

Public opinion has favoured three people to succeed Governor Ajimobi considering their strength politically, the support they get and their popularity in the State while people also understand that an alliance of Ajimobi and Akala will work well for any candidate they both support.
