Former Taraba Governor, Dambaba Suntai Dies

Former Taraba state governor, Mr. Dambaba Suntai, who survived an air crash at the Yola Airport in 2012, is dead.

He died at home on Wednesday.

He is reported to have brain injuries arising from the plane accident

Mr. Emmanuel Bello, a former Commissioner for Information in the state, broke the news of the death.

The former governor, who flew the light plane, crashed in October 2012 and had not recovered fully since then.

He became governor of Taraba state in 2007 and was sworn again on May 29, 2011 for a second term.

A pharmacist by training, Suntai enrolled for training as a pilot at the Nigerian College of Aviation in Zaria in 2010 and was thus licensed.

Prior to his plane crash in 2012, Suntai had been flown to Germany for medication after returning from his annual leave in August 2009, following a sudden ailment that was suspected to have developed from food poisoning.

On his return from Germany, Suntai spoke at the opening of a three-day regional convention of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International in Jalingo, where said his meal was actually poisoned.

He had had several successful flights with his private aircraft even while piloting the affairs of Taraba State as governor.

But his current travails started precisely on October 25, 2012, when a private plane he piloted crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

After receiving the initial treatment at the Adamawa Standard German Hospital in Yola he was later transferred to the National Hospital Abuja on October 26, 2012. From there he was flown to Germany and was later taken to a rehabilitation centre in the United States for further medication.

After 10 months of medical sojourn overseas, Danbaba Danfulani Suntai finally returned to the country on August 23, 2013.

After weeks of political intrigues in the North-East state based on claims and counterclaims over his health status, it was revealed that the former Taraba State governor was not healthy enough to live in Nigeria without adequate treatment, or to govern a state.

He was subsequently flown abroad again for treatment, even as his then deputy, Garba Umar, was empowered by the Taraba State House of Assembly to fully take over the ship of the state in acting capacity.

He was brought back in the build-up to the 2015 elections and remained confined in Jalingo until after the change of guards on May 29, 2015.

Suntai was born June 30 1961 and attended the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he studied pharmacy.

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday struck out a suit filed against a House of Representatives member, Aliyu Pategi, charged with failure to produce an ex-minister he stood surety for.
Pategi, who represented Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency of Kwara, was on June 16, brought to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through a motion on notice.
The EFCC Prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, had told the court that the defendant stood surety for his wife, Oloye Akinjide, an ex-Minister of State, wanted for alleged conspiracy and laundering of N650 million.
According to the commission, Akinjide collected the money from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke in March 2015.
Oyedepo, in a 16-paragraph affidavit, said the money was received as a gratification by the former petroleum minister from some oil marketers.
He also told the court that Akinjide was on Aug. 10, 2016 granted bail after Pategi stood as her surety on a N650 million bail bond.
The prosecutor said that Pategi promised to produce Akinjide whenever she was needed.
He said a 24-count charge bordering on money laundering and conspiracy was brought against Akinjide before Justice Ayo Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, in suit No. FHC/IB/26C/2017.
Oyedepo, however, said Akinjide failed to turn up in court after more than three proceedings despite the service of the charge on her.
He said that Federal High Court, therefore, threatened to dismiss the charge because Akinjide has not been seen since and Pategi, despite repeated demands, failed to produce her.
Oyedepo said that Pategi should show cause why the N650 million should not be forfeited to the Federal Government.
He was, however, remanded in custody.
When the case came up on Tuesday, the EFCC prosecutor, told the court that Akinjide had reported at the EFCC’s office.
“I just confirmed from the EFCC zonal office that Akinjide has turned herself to the EFCC custody.
“Since it was the inability of Pategi to produce Akinjide that triggered our application, we apply that this suit be struck out in view of the success of producing Akinjide.
“In the interest of justice, I seek to withdraw this suit,” Oyedepo said.
Earlier, counsel to the defendant, Mr Adenrele Adegborioye, told the court that the business of the day was for summons for bail to be heard including the preliminary objection filed.
He also notified the court that an arrangement was being made for an out-of-court settlement.
Adegborioye withdrew his application for preliminary objection and urged the court to suspend the suit until the out-of-court settlement was reached.
Magistrate Afolashade Botoku, after listening to the parties, struck out the suit, said “based on the application of the prosecutor, the suit is hereby struck out and the defendant released.”

Friends, Families Kick As Court Remands Jumoke Akinjide’s Husband, Aliyu Pategi In Prison

A Lagos State Magistrate’s court in Igbosere has ordered that the lawmaker representing Edu/Moro/Patigi constituency at the House of Representatives, Aliyu Pategi be remanded in the custody of the EFCC over his inability to produce his wife, former Minister of FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide who is on the run over an alleged financial offences being investigated by the EFCC.

The EFCC had told the Judge that Pategi stood surety for his wife who has a pending criminal charge against her before the Federal High Court in Ibadan.

The EFCC had earlier charged Akinjide, a daughter of former Minister of Justice, Chief Richard Akinjide with money laundering, alleging that she collected N650m doled out by a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. Mrs Deziani Allison Maduekwe to compromise the 2015 general elections.

The former Minister whose husband, Pategi stood surety for in the sum of N650m jumped bail while the EFCC dragged her husband to court while asking him to show cause why he should not forfeit the money to the Federal Government.

Jumoke Akinjide who was arrested alongside another PDP chieftain, Chief Ayo Adeseun had since vanished immediately after her bail with no one having information to her whereabout.

Akinjide, a Queens Counsel married Honorable Pategi in a low profile wedding in Abuja some years ago.

Insiders revealed that the family members and friends of Aliyu Pategi had criticized Akinjide’s action.

An associate of the detained lawmaker told Papermacheonline that if truly she loves her husband she would have come out of hiding and face her ordeals. The friend who couldn’t hide his anger lamented ‘Aliyu was only trying to help, see how she has paid back. Is that love?’

Meanwhile the EFCC claimed to have intensified its search for the woman who fled the country immediately she was granted bail. The last that was heard of her was in 2016 when she was said to have ordered her drivers to sell some of the buses used for the presidential campaign of former President Goodluck Jonathan to some unidentified buyers.
