Nigeria’s Apex Bank In Foreign Public Relations Contract Scandal

Godwin-Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has given itself a new mandate and it has nothing to do with money matters. It does not even have anything to do with stabilising the foreign exchange regime or strengthening the naira, desirable as that task is.
The new role of Nigeria’s apex bank is to launder Nigeria’s image abroad.
In what is the latest in a trend of frivolous and wasteful spending of tax payers’ money, the apex bank in April engaged the services of APCO Worldwide Inc., a public relations and political consultancy firm based in Washington DC, to help launder the image of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the country in the United States.
In the last three years, the icirnigeria.org has tracked many of such controversial contracts amounting to over $6 million dollars awarded by different agencies of the Nigerian government to foreign firms to launder the country’s image abroad.
From our investigations, such contracts, it appears, are mere conduits for siphoning public funds.

Just like Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, its such a way to describe the present state of affairs in the home of the son of former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, Mohammed.

An audio leak where the polo buff was saying derogatory things about his wife has blown to the public while the ex-wife, Rahman who was fingered to be the plotter behind it has come out to vehemently denied knowing where and how the audio came to life.

A furious Rahma, daughter of billionaire, Alhaji Indimi took to her instagram page and posted “it is rather unfortunate that people you confide in can just go through your phone and post such an embarrassing audio of you know who. It is no secret that we have been divorced and I did not hide it. He is the father of my children and I do respect him. The leakage of the audio was done in poor taste so people pls stop tagging me…What goes on in his house is his business and not mine…’

According to those in the know, Umuani was the first woman Mohammed ever fell in love with. Though he later married Rahma but he didn’t stop loving Umuani and that was why he announced his decision to take a second wife after four years of living with Rahman as man a wife, a decision that provoked the first wife and later led to the collapse of their marriage.

Mohammed is claimed to be very sad with the audio leakage and has vowed to unravel the identity of whosoever is behind the leakage with the intent of measuring punishment.

As unusual as it was, the gesture of APC chieftain and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to reach out to the masses during the festive period of ramadan turned ugly this year as people died and many were injured at the venue of the presentation of gifts and materials in Lagos.

The Onikan stadium, Lagos venue of the Bola Tinubu’s Foundation of free gifts turned to a slaughter slab as a stampede occurred where two were feared killed while many sustained serious injuries.

The main victims were women and the children who were trampled upon by the mammoth crowd that gathered to benefit from the freebies.

Sources blamed the logistics by the planners with claims that ‘there was no proper arrangement on crowd control and there was not a single ambulance at sight in readiness for a situation like this’.

The wounded were seen being ferried on stretchers to nearby hospitals while the dead were taken to the mortuary.

According to an eye witness who spoke to papermacheonline. ‘I counted 5 dead bodies and several others that are wounded. Most of the dead were the old and children who couldn’t regain their stand immediately they fell and were trampled upon’.

A popular online portal, Societyreelnews contacted the coordinator and special assistant to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the telephone and he confirmed there was a stampede and claimed he could not speak on the number of lives that were lost.

The unfortunate incident was said to have thrown the Lagos politician into mourning as he had never experienced such in over a decade he had been reaching out to the masses during the Sallah, Ramadan and Christmas periods.
